There are several ways to get rid of throat mucus or phlegm. You are probably familiar with that disturbing feeling of having mucus in your throat, which can make breathing extremely difficult. Mucus or phlegm in the throat can be uncomfortable and cause bad breath or other health problems.

  2. Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to loosen phlegm and thin mucus – it is also good for your overall health
  3. Blow your nose frequently to prevent mucus from draining into your throat
  4. Gargle regularly with warm water and salt
  5. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer to loosen phlegm and relieve congestion
  6. Avoid eating foods such as dairy products, meat or fried foods that increase mucus production
  7. Drink hot liquids such as herbal tea or chicken broth to moisten the airways and break up the mucus
  8. Add a teaspoon of turmeric to half a glass of milk – turmeric contains antiseptic properties that fights infection
  9. Use a humidifier or cool mist vaporizer in your bedroom at night to thin the mucus – this helps to moisten the air and is particularly helpful during winter
  10. Limit exposure to irritants such as household cleaners, paint fumes, chemicals or cigarette smoke
  11. Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer to loosen mucus and phlegm and relieve congestion
  12. Stop smoking as it irritates the throat and worsens respiratory conditions
  13. Eat spicy foods, horseradish or hot chili peppers to loosen mucus
  14. Use lemon and honey. Mix approximately 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey with a cup of hot water. This mixture should help clear your throat, as the lemon will cut through the mucus while the honey will soothe the throat.
If you cough out phlegm that is yellow or green in color or if it comes with blood, consult your doctor immediately. Remember that these are signs of a more serious health problem.
